Ri Bhoi, February 4 : A media delegation from Karnataka on Tuesday visited Umden Diwon Silk Village in Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya as part of a Press Tour organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). The village is celebrated for its centuries-old tradition of Eri silk weaving and its vibrant community-led craftsmanship.
Umden Diwon is widely known for producing Eri silk, locally called Ryndai, which recently received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag in recognition of its unique regional identity and traditional heritage. Eri silk is an “ahimsa” or non-violent silk, extracted without killing silkworms, making it an eco-friendly and ethically produced textile.
During the visit, the delegation interacted closely with local artisans, especially women weavers, and observed the complete silk-making process—from rearing silkworms and spinning yarn to natural dyeing and handloom weaving. Artisans showcased the use of dyes derived from indigenous plants and organic materials, highlighting the chemical-free and sustainable nature of the craft.
Members of women-led Self Help Groups (SHGs) shared their experiences of preserving traditional techniques, expanding production, and generating steady livelihoods through collective enterprise.
The journalists examined the intricate patterns and textures of Eri silk products such as shawls and stoles. Discussions revolved around improving market access, branding GI-tagged products, and the role of media in bringing national attention to indigenous crafts.
The visit assumes added importance following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reference to Meghalaya’s Eri silk in the 123rd episode of Mann Ki Baat. The Prime Minister praised the women of the state for spearheading Eri silk production through SHGs, describing it as a powerful example of sustainability, cultural preservation, and livelihood creation.
Members of the Karnataka media team expressed admiration for the skill and resilience of the artisans and noted the potential of Umden Diwon to boost rural entrepreneurship, promote GI-tagged indigenous products, and strengthen sustainable tourism in Meghalaya.
