Shillong, August 3: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Meghalaya Government, demanding immediate action on several long-pending issues, including the cancellation of the Shree Cement public hearing in East Jaintia Hills, implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), migrant workers’ law amendments, NEIGRIHMS recruitment issues, and recruitment reforms. The Union warned that it would launch protests if its demands are not addressed within the stipulated period.
In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on August 3, the KSU alleged that repeated discussions and meetings with the Government had failed to produce any meaningful outcome. The Union also criticised what it described as the Government’s handling of recent events in East Jaintia Hills and accused it of delaying several important public issues.
Among its key demands, the KSU called for the cancellation of the public hearing conducted for the proposed Shree Cement project on July 31. The Union also sought the suspension and initiation of departmental proceedings against the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills, along with officials of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), alleging irregularities during the hearing process.
The Union further demanded the immediate implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016, along with the establishment of facilitation centres at entry and exit points across the State. It also opposed the online verification system for tenants and maintained that verification should continue through local Dorbar Shnongs.
The KSU also urged the Government to enforce the amendments to the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety & Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020, stating that the amendments had been approved nearly two years ago but were yet to be implemented.
On the NEIGRIHMS recruitment issue, the Union said the State Government had failed to fulfil assurances made in May 2025 regarding recruitment reforms and reservation-related demands. It urged the Government to resolve the matter at the earliest to prevent further disruption in the healthcare sector.
The KSU also called for reforms in the recruitment process by abolishing personal interviews for Group B (Non-Gazetted), Group C and Group D posts in line with Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) guidelines. It further demanded implementation of reforms in the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) and District Selection Committees (DSCs) to ensure transparency and fairness in recruitment.
Additionally, the Union reiterated its demand for stronger measures against uranium mining, including urging the Autonomous District Councils to enact laws prohibiting uranium mining and seeking the removal of the Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD) office from Nongmensong.
The KSU stated that if the Government fails to act on the demands within 15 days, it will have no option but to launch various forms of agitation.
