KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle President, General Secretary Granted Bail After Several Weeks in Jail

Shillong, October 29: Two leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Shillong Mihngi Circle, have been granted bail after spending several weeks in Shillong District Jail in connection with cases arising from the black flag rally organised by the union in Shillong on August 19, 2026.

The two leaders are KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle President Banjoplang Dkhar and General Secretary Samuel Kharbani, who were arrested on September 11 and September 3, respectively. Dkhar was arrested by police near the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) at Mawdiangdiang, Shillong, on September 11, while Kharbani was arrested on September 3 after appearing before police at Sadar Police Station. Kharbani’s arrest was linked to an incident involving the locking of a temple constructed within the premises of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office at Mawdiangdiang by members of the KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle.

Following their release on bail, the two leaders were welcomed outside Shillong District Jail by several KSU leaders, including KSU Central Executive Council (CEC) Vice President Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, along with former union leaders, members and family members. Meanwhile, KSU Nongmensong Unit President and Assistant General Secretary of the KSU CEC, Jeremiah Pohthmi, continues to remain in judicial custody following his arrest by police from his residence on the night of August 23, 2026.

KSU CEC Vice President Pynkmenlang Sanmiet has also been granted interim bail for 20 days by the court to undergo medical treatment due to health complications. It may be mentioned that KSU CEC President Raymond Kharjana and General Secretary Reuben A. Najiar were granted bail a few days earlier in connection with cases arising from the August 19 black flag rally.

The latest development marks the release of two more KSU leaders who had remained in custody for several weeks, while legal proceedings against other union members continue.
