KSU Submits Memoranda to MLAs, Announces Sit-In Protests Over Five-Point Charter

Shillong, August 21: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has submitted memoranda to all 36 MLAs representing constituencies in the Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills, urging them to raise the union’s five-point charter of demands before the Meghalaya Government during the upcoming Autumn Session of the State Assembly. The Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is scheduled to begin on August 24.

The KSU said the memoranda were submitted on Thursday by members of its various units and circles falling under the respective Assembly constituencies. The union also said it would make an effort to submit similar memoranda to the 24 MLAs representing constituencies in the Garo Hills.

According to the KSU, elected representatives have a responsibility to raise issues concerning employment opportunities and other matters affecting indigenous communities. The union said it was now leaving it to the MLAs to discharge their responsibilities by taking up these issues with the government.

The KSU further announced that it would continue its agitation over the five demands until the State Government takes concrete steps towards their implementation. As part of its ongoing agitation, the union will stage a sit-in demonstration on August 24 from 11 am at the statue of U Kiang Nangbah, opposite Shillong Civil Hospital.

The following day, August 25, similar sit-in demonstrations will be organised simultaneously across seven districts of the Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills region.

The union, however, said it would not organise any agitation programme on August 22, keeping in view the LDA examination being conducted by the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC), so that candidates appearing for the examination are not inconvenienced.
