Shillong, August 10: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Laban Circle Education Cell, has urged the Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School to introduce Khasi as a subject in its school curriculum from the academic year 2027 onwards.
In a letter signed by Kevin Nelson Wanrap, Chairman of the Education Cell, and Andrew P. Kharbithai, Secretary of the Education Cell, KSU Laban Circle. addressed to the Principal of the school on August 10, the KSU said the inclusion of Khasi would play an important role in strengthening students’ connection with their linguistic and cultural roots.
The Union highlighted that language is an essential component of a community’s identity, history and culture. It said the Khasi language carries generations of knowledge, traditions, values and cultural heritage, and providing students with an opportunity to study the language in school would contribute to its preservation and development.
The KSU further stated that introducing Khasi as a subject would provide students with a meaningful platform to learn and appreciate the richness of the language, while ensuring that indigenous languages continue to be valued and passed on to future generations.
The Union expressed hope that the school authority would include Khasi in the curriculum from the 2027 academic year, in accordance with the relevant academic guidelines and provisions.
