Shillong, August 27: Lawyers of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association (HCMBA) and Shillong Bar Association (SBA) on Thursday staged a protest demanding the removal of Meghalaya Advocate General Amit Kumar from office.
As part of the protest, the lawyers put garlands of footwear around an effigy representing Kumar and later set it on fire as a mark of condemnation. Bar associations across Meghalaya have also demanded his removal, alleging that his conduct and remarks during court proceedings were disrespectful towards members of the legal fraternity.
The protest followed allegations concerning remarks reportedly made by the Advocate General during court proceedings in connection with the safety of women in bars.
At a joint meeting, the two bar associations unanimously decided to submit a written representation to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, urging the state government to remove Kumar from the post of Advocate General. The associations said they would continue their agitation until the government takes action on their demand.
Earlier in the day, the lawyers took out a rally through Shillong as part of the protest. Meanwhile, personnel of the Central Government’s Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed near Civil Hospital, Shillong, to monitor the law-and-order situation following recent incidents in the city and in view of the lawyers’ rally.
