Shillong, September 1: Lawyers of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association (HCMBA) and Shillong Bar Association (SBA) have intensified their agitation by abstaining from legal work from Tuesday, demanding the removal of Amit Kumar as Advocate General of Meghalaya.”
Shillong Bar Association Secretary T.L. Jyrwa told the media that the decision followed a meeting with Meghalaya Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, during which the two Bar associations expressed disappointment that their demand for Kumar’s removal had not been taken up in the recent meetings of the State Cabinet.
According to Jyrwa, the Law Minister informed the lawyers that any decision to remove Amit Kumar from the post of Advocate General would have to be taken by the Cabinet. The two Bar associations are scheduled to meet again on Thursday, September 3, to decide on further courses of action as part of their agitation, Jyrwa said.
As part of their protest on Tuesday, lawyers from the two associations threw eggs at an effigy of Amit Kumar placed at the entrance of the Bar Association office. The effigy carried the message, “Amit Kumar, Advocate General, Go Back, Go Back.”
The HCMBA and SBA reiterated their demand that the State Government immediately remove Kumar from the post of Advocate General. The lawyers had recently also organised a peaceful rally through Shillong as part of their ongoing protest against Kumar.
