Man Arrested in Jorhat for Alleged Shillong School Girls Sexual Assault Case

Shillong, May 29 : A special team formed by the East Khasi Hills Police has arrested a man from Jorhat, Assam, in connection with a sexual assault case involving a school girl in Shillong, which recently gained widespread attention after a video went viral on social media.

On May 24, 2025, the Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills District, received information about a video circulating online. The footage reportedly showed a masked individual sexually assaulting a school girl and then taking photographs through his mobile phone. A special team, led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Ops) Ivan B. Diengdoh, MPS, was immediately constituted on May 26, 2025, to identify and apprehend the culprit.

Investigations quickly identified the place of occurrence as Umsolsun (lane leading to YWCA), and the incident was confirmed to have taken place on May 23, 2025, around 6:35 AM. An FIR was registered, and the case was lodged as Lumdiengjri PS Case number 55(05)2025 under Sections 365 BNS R/w Sec. 11/12 POCSO Act.

Further investigations by the special team led to the identification of the accused as Himan Gogoi, a 24-year-old from Jorhat, Assam. Working in conjunction with WPSI Lavinia Kongwang, a team left for Jorhat on May 28, 2025. In a joint raid with Lahdoigarh OutPost of Jorhat, the accused Himan Gogoi was apprehended from his relative’s house in Bamkukurachua village, under Teok P.S., Jorhat.

The police team has recovered the mobile phone allegedly used by the accused and other incriminating evidence. Gogoi has also been implicated in Teok P.S. Case No. 43(03)25 u/s 329(3)/79 BNS Act. After transit remand, he will be produced in a Court in Shillong.

In a separate but related development, another case of sexual assault on a school girl was registered at Sadar P.S. on May 19, 2025, which occurred between 7:15 AM and 7:30 AM, on the steps near Dreamland, Police Bazar. This case (Sadar PS Case number 140(5)2025 u/s 7/8 POCSO Act) is also being treated with high sensitivity.

Both cases are being treated as “Special Report cases” due to their sensitive nature.
