Man Convicted in POCSO Case; Sentenced to 3 Years and 6 Months Rigorous Imprisonment

Mawkyrwat, November 17 : In a significant verdict delivered by the Special Judge (POCSO) Court, South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat, the accused Robarness Lyngdoh, 25, a resident of Mawmerang, was convicted for committing sexual assault on a minor under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The case was initiated following an FIR lodged on February 14, 2021, by the victim’s brother, Nemannbor Lyngdoh, a resident of Rangthong Village, South West Khasi Hills. In his complaint, he alleged that the accused had committed penetrative sexual assault on his minor sister.

Upon registration of the case as Mawkyrwat Women Police Station Case No. 03(02)2021, offences were booked under Sections 3(a), 4, 5(n), and 6 of the POCSO Act, read with Section 506 of the IPC.

The investigation was led by WPSI M.M. Arengh, who conducted a meticulous and comprehensive inquiry, ensuring that justice was served to the victim. The case was charge-sheeted on March 31, 2021, and subsequently forwarded for trial.

After due consideration of the evidence, the Special POCSO Court, Mawkyrwat, on October 14, 2025, convicted the accused. The Court sentenced Robarness Lyngdoh to rigorous imprisonment for three years and six months and imposed a fine of ₹10,000. In default of payment, the accused will undergo an additional two weeks of simple imprisonment.

The Superintendent of Police, South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat, issued a statement commending the dedicated efforts of the Investigating Officer and the department’s unwavering pursuit of justice for the victim.

The conviction, the statement noted, stands as a testament to the diligence, professionalism, and commitment of the district police in ensuring that offenders under the POCSO Act are brought to justice.
