Shillong, December 18 : The city of Paris hosted a vivid celebration of India’s cultural legacy with “Meghalaya à Vendôme,” an exclusive evening dedicated to the handloom heritage of Meghalaya, organised with the support of the Bhartiya Paris Club.
The showcase was led by Sweety Jane Pala—regional actress, film producer and designer—who presented the enduring craftsmanship of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo communities to an international audience. Through authentic handwoven textiles and traditional garments, the event traced Meghalaya’s textile journey from silk cocoon to thread, fabric and final attire, offering a rare glimpse of Northeast India’s weaving traditions within a Western fashion setting.
Held in the heart of Paris, the presentation drew attention from senior figures in global fashion and luxury, with Meghalaya’s traditional clothing displayed before CEOs and representatives of marquee brands including Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Ralph Lauren.
Organisers said the evening underscored sustainability, artisanal excellence and cultural identity, highlighting intricate weaving techniques and indigenous aesthetics that have been preserved across generations. The initiative was positioned as a conversation between tradition and global fashion, reinforcing the need to protect and promote India’s handloom legacy on international platforms.
The Bhartiya Paris Club, which supported the programme, reiterated its role in promoting Indian culture abroad by fostering cross-cultural exchange and creating global visibility for India’s diverse regional heritage.
“Meghalaya à Vendôme” concluded as a statement of craftsmanship and cultural diplomacy—placing Meghalaya’s handloom traditions firmly in the international spotlight.
