Shillong, May 26: Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Thomas A. Sangma, is attending the 16th Canadian Parliamentary Seminar being held in Ottawa, Canada, from May 25 to 29, 2026.
The seminar is being organised by the Parliament of Canada under the theme “Parliaments in the 21st Century: Innovation and Adaptation for Democracy.”
The international programme has brought together parliamentary leaders and officials from different countries to deliberate on contemporary democratic challenges and evolving parliamentary practices.
According to an official statement, the seminar will feature discussions on several important subjects, including the Canadian parliamentary system, the role of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), youth engagement in parliamentary democracy, women’s political leadership, modern parliamentary infrastructure, accountability mechanisms, adaptation to traditional and social media, electronic voting, hybrid proceedings in the House of Commons and the future role of artificial intelligence in parliaments.
Thomas A. Sangma is accompanied by Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma and Deputy Secretary Raja K. Kharpuri.
The statement added that participation in the international seminar is expected to provide valuable exposure to emerging parliamentary innovations and best practices, which could further strengthen democratic governance and legislative functioning in Meghalaya.
