Meghalaya Celebrates 77th Republic Day with Patriotic Fervour

Shillong, January 26 : Meghalaya joined the rest of the nation in celebrating the 77th Republic Day with patriotic enthusiasm and grandeur on Monday. The state-level function was held at Polo Grounds, Shillong, where Governor C.H. Vijayashankar unfurled the National Flag and took the Salute of the impressive marching contingents.

The parade featured units from the CRPF, BSF, District Executive Force (East Khasi Hills), Assam Police, 1st MLP Battalion, NCC Boys & Girls, Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides, and students from Phudmuri Presbyterian Secondary School, JNV Mawphlang, BDW International School, Assam Rifles Public School, and Kendriya Vidyalaya NEHU. The Brass Band of Meghalaya Police, Border Wing Home Guards, and Border Security Forcealso participated in the ceremonial parade.

During the ceremony, the Governor presented the U Tirot Sing Award 2026 for Arts and Literature to Dr. Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih, the Pa Togan N. Sangma Award 2026 for Social Service to Father Benoy Joseph, and the U Kiang Nangbah Award 2026 for Sports and Games to Riiohlang Dhar.

He also felicitated Padma Shri awardee Hally War, a social worker from Sohra, for his pioneering work in revitalising Khasi living root bridges, promoting environmental conservation, and strengthening community livelihoods through traditional bioengineering.

The Governor announced the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) to Jubi Gabil Momin, DIG, and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service to  Bashanborlang J. Laloo, Commandant, and Babu Chow Sinha, Sub-Inspector.

The Republic Day celebration also featured a tableau presentation showcasing the cultural and developmental achievements of various departments, including the Tourism Department, Directorate of Mineral Resources, DRDA, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Fisheries, Soil and Water Conservation, and Skill Development Society.

The Directorate of Mineral Resources won first place, followed by the Tourism Department in second and the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) in third.

In the March Past competition, Phudmuri Presbyterian Higher Secondary School secured first place, while BDW International School and Assam Rifles Public School took the second and third positions, respectively.

Adding a vibrant touch to the occasion, The Infinity Choir and Nongrah Presbyterian Secondary School enthralled the audience with patriotic and cultural performances, reflecting Meghalaya’s unity in diversity.

The prizes for the winners were distributed by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who congratulated all participants for their spirited performances.
