Meghalaya Destroys ₹53 Crore Worth of Seized Drugs in Major Anti-Narcotics Operation

Lumshnong, January 23 : In a significant demonstration of its commitment to combating drug trafficking, the Meghalaya government today destroyed seized drugs with a street value exceeding ₹53 crore. The Drug Disposal Programme, held at Star Cement Limited in Lumshnong, was presided over by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, and Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang, IPS. Senior police officials, representatives from civil society, and members of the media were also in attendance.

The destroyed narcotics included approximately ₹23.98 crore worth of heroin, ₹7.6 crore worth of ganja (cannabis), and ₹21.3 crore worth of crystal methamphetamine. The incineration process was conducted according to the guidelines of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, ensuring transparency and adherence to legal procedures.

Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the state government’s unwavering commitment to its war on drugs, stating, “Today’s disposal of drugs underscores our unwavering commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking in Meghalaya. This is a strong message to the community that we are serious about this fight and will continue to take decisive action.”

Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong commended the police and other involved departments for their efforts, highlighting the collaborative approach to combating drug abuse. DGP Nongrang assured the public of full transparency in the disposal process, stating that every step was conducted lawfully and fully documented.

Star Cement Limited facilitated the incineration by providing its high-temperature facilities, for which the Chief Minister expressed his appreciation.

The event also highlighted the state government’s holistic approach to the drug problem, which includes rehabilitation initiatives and community involvement, with acknowledgment given to the roles of the Health Minister and Social Welfare Department.

This disposal is part of the government’s ongoing anti-drug efforts, which include the establishment of dedicated Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) teams and specialized police stations across Meghalaya. Further drug disposals are planned, with the necessary legal approvals currently being processed.
