Jowai, January 13 : Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri today unveiled the official mascot, “U Kiang,” and the theme song, “Niom Beit Naphang,” for the 6th Meghalaya Games during a curtain-raiser event at the District Library Auditorium in Mynthong, Jowai. The theme song captures the spirit of sportsmanship and unity, while the mascot, “U Kiang,” embodies the spirit of a freedom fighter.
The event was attended by local MLA and Chairman of MUDA, Wailadmiki Shylla, Working President of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA), John Kharshiing, Vice President of MSOA and Chairperson of the Reception Committee, Matsiewdor War Nongbri, Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, General Secretary of MSOA, Finely Pariat, Deputy Commissioner B.S. Sohliya, IAS, Superintendent of Police C. Syrti MPS, headmen from various Jowai localities, and other organizers.
Minister Warjri emphasized the importance of investing in sports infrastructure and youth development, stating that sports instill discipline, build character, and promote unity. He highlighted the state government’s commitment to prioritizing sports infrastructure and funding for sports associations. He also mentioned the government’s focus on repurposing existing facilities in schools and colleges instead of constructing new venues, ensuring that these investments benefit educational institutions and local communities beyond the games.
Minister Warjri also spoke about the government’s vision to empower youth to excel in sports at both the state and national levels, reaffirming their commitment to nurturing athletes.
Following the launch, Minister Warjri, along with MLA Shylla and organizers, inspected several venues to assess their readiness for the upcoming Meghalaya Games. The Elev8 Tribes Choir also performed at the event.
