Shillong, August 5, 2025 – Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today announced a significant investment of ₹240 crore over the next three years for the Floriculture Mission 1.0, with an ambitious vision to establish the state as a leading floriculture hub in the Northeast and across the country.
Speaking in Mawkriah village, East Khasi Hills, alongside Agriculture Minister Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh and MLA Ronnie Lyngdoh, the Chief Minister highlighted that the mission, launched in March 2024, aims to make floriculture a high-value, climate-resilient, and sustainable livelihood for farmers. The mission is designed to benefit over 3,000 farmers by providing a ₹7 lakh subsidy package that covers inputs, infrastructure, and training. To date, nearly 500 farmers have already availed these benefits.
“This is the highest investment any government has made in floriculture in Meghalaya,” said the Chief Minister, adding, “We expect a direct profit generation of ₹600 crore through this mission over the next few years.”
The mission will focus on cultivating high-value flowers such as Orchids (Dendrobium, Cymbidium, Vanda, and Phalaenopsis) and Oriental Lilium, which are in high demand both domestically and internationally. Meghalaya’s unique agro-climatic conditions, blending tropical and temperate elements, make it an ideal location for these crops.
To ensure quality and market access, the government has partnered with two experienced service providers, Darjeeling Gardens and North Bengal Floritech. These partners will provide technical expertise, high-quality planting materials, infrastructure support, and guaranteed market linkage through a three-year buyback arrangement.
The floriculture mission is a key component of the state’s broader agricultural vision, which includes the successful Lakadong Turmeric Mission, and is aimed at doubling farmers’ incomes, diversifying rural livelihoods, and making agriculture a cornerstone of sustainable development. To support this growth, the government also plans to establish dedicated storage and logistics hubs to ensure efficient market access for farmers.
