Shillong, June 13, 2025 – Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today underscored the critical need for inter-departmental alignment and a broader, shared vision to achieve sustainable and inclusive human development across the state. His remarks came during the launch of the ‘District Nutrition Challenge’ at a two-day District Nutrition Leadership Workshop held in Shillong.
Emphasizing the importance of clearly defined objectives, Chief Minister Sangma stated, “We often work tirelessly day and night, but without a clear goal, we end up achieving very little. That is why setting defined, measurable goals is crucial. The District Nutrition Challenge is not just about numbers – it is about purpose, impact, and improving the lives of our people, especially mothers and children.” He reiterated, “We must focus on our goals, but more importantly, on the purpose behind those goals.”
The workshop, organized by the Human Development Council (HDC), aims to empower districts to set and pursue localized targets for improving key nutrition indicators. These include promoting exclusive breastfeeding, reducing anemia, and enhancing accessibility to local food solutions through community-based programs.
The Chief Minister also elaborated on the government’s commitment to inclusive growth, referencing the state’s target of a $10 billion US dollar economy. “It’s not just about 10 billion or 10 opportunities—it’s about converting these numbers into equity, into tangible social good. That is the real purpose of governance,” he asserted.
Highlighting the state’s push for people-centric governance, Sangma cited the “CM Connect” program as a prime example. “Through CM Connect, I have been able to meet and listen to our people directly. It is not an event—it is a way of governance. I urge officials to create more such platforms like DC Connect and BDO Connect to bring the administration closer to the grassroots.”
Calling for a transformative shift in mindset, Chief Minister Sangma urged officials to move beyond working in silos. “We know the challenges. What we now need is clearly defined action—who will do what, how it will be done, and by when. Let us stop working in silos and start working with a shared vision and accountability,” he urged.
The significant workshop saw the attendance of Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh, Community & Rural Development Minister A T Mondal, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, and Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, alongside district officials and various stakeholders from across Meghalaya.
The launch of the District Nutrition Challenge marks a crucial step for Meghalaya towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, reinforcing the state’s dedication to fostering a healthier and more equitable future for all its citizens.
