Meghalaya Launches “Mission Clean Shillong 2027” in Public Consultation

Shillong, July 4 : The Urban Affairs Department, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Shillong Municipal Board, today convened a city-wide public consultation for “Mission Clean Shillong 2027” at the State Convention Centre, Shillong. This decisive move towards urban transformation aims to co-create a roadmap for a cleaner, greener Shillong in preparation for the National Games 2027, which the city is set to host.

The consultation brought together “Rangbah Shnongs,” civic bodies, experts, and residents. P.K. Boro, Director of Urban Affairs, emphasized the crucial role of grassroots involvement, urging attendees to share their concerns and ideas to develop a robust and comprehensive Mission Document.

F.B. Chyne, Executive Engineer, Shillong Municipal Board, presented the city’s current waste management strategy, stressing that “No household should be left behind” to ensure community-led, city-wide, and sustainable waste management. He highlighted recent infrastructure interventions, including the deployment of 74 garbage collection vehicles to strengthen waste collection and transportation. On the processing and disposal front, a 170-tonne-per-day composting plant has been installed, four waste recovery centers constructed and made operational, and a 15,000 sq. m. sanitary landfill site developed and commissioned.

K. Kharumnuid, Mission Director, Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0, announced that the “My City, My Pride” campaign is slated for completion by October 2025. He invited further suggestions from the public and local bodies, encouraging stakeholders to submit feedback to the Urban Affairs Department by August 2025.

An official presentation on the Mission Clean Shillong 2027 document outlined the vision of a world-class, zero-litter, eco-conscious Shillong ahead of the National Games. Key pillars of the initiative include:

  • 100% scientific processing and disposal of solid waste
  • Elimination of legacy waste at Marten landfill
  • Zero solid waste discharge into rivers and water bodies
  • Restoration and beautification of public spaces
  • Enhanced grievance redressal and citizen engagement platforms

The draft mission document, launched by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on World Environment Day, is part of the state’s larger “Mission 10 (2022–2032)” vision for holistic growth. The mission aims to transform Shillong into a national model for urban cleanliness through community participation, infrastructure upgrades, and policy innovation.

In alignment with broader sustainability goals, the government is promoting clean mobility and greening initiatives. This includes scaling the successful STEMS school bus program with 30 new buses, supporting green start-ups and eco-infrastructure like rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, and zero-discharge systems. Additionally, 1.8 crore saplings have been planted across 27,000 hectares over the past five years to restore green cover.

Dorbar Shnong representatives actively participated, raising queries on septic tanks, stray animal control, overhanging cables, and the performance of waste management agencies. The consultation reflects the Government’s commitment to transparency and dialogue, calling upon citizens, civil society, institutions, and private stakeholders to be active partners in building a cleaner, healthier, and future-ready Shillong.
