Meghalaya Launches State’s First Sailing Yacht, “Meghalinor,” at Umiam Lake

Shillong, June 4 : In a significant boost to both tourism and sports, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today officially launched “Meghalinor,” Meghalaya’s first sailing yacht, at the picturesque Umiam Lake. This new addition is set to enhance the lake’s allure and actively promote water sports, leveraging another key strength of the state.

Chief Minister Sangma hailed the launch as a “very meaningful program” that effectively merges two critical areas for the state government: tourism and sports. He emphasized that this synergy would yield a much greater impact than individual initiatives.

Looking ahead, the Chief Minister outlined ambitious infrastructure plans for Umiam Lake, beyond just sailing and water sports. “We will be developing this into one of the best resorts in the entire eastern region,” he stated, revealing plans for a “very, very high-end resort” with developers expected to be on board within approximately a month. He projected the resort’s completion within two to three years, envisioning it as potentially “one of the best in the country.” Furthermore, the government is working towards introducing seaplanes taking off from Umiam Lake, with a hopeful circuit connecting to top Northeast destinations like Kaziranga.

The Chief Minister also revealed plans for larger yachts and cruises around the Umiam property, allowing tourists to spend evenings and even stay onboard, enjoying various programs and celebrations. He highlighted the growing potential of water sports in the state, particularly in light of the upcoming National Games. “Even if 50 per cent water sports medal can be won by Meghalaya will be a great contribution,” he remarked, underscoring the state’s athletic aspirations.

Minister of Tourism, Paul Lyngdoh, marked today’s event as “another remarkable chapter in the success story of Meghalaya tourism.” He explained that “Meghalinor” is more than just a yacht; its name, a blend of “Valinor” and “Meghalaya,” promises a “mega experience.” Minister Lyngdoh also announced the acquisition of close to 300 acres of land from the forest department, including Nehru Park, for tourism development. He anticipates the launch of Umiam Cruise services within the next year, all designed to elevate the experience for both visitors and locals.

Dr. Vijay Kumar D, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Department of Tourism, reiterated the significance of the event in uniting tourism and sports, creating an inspiring moment for athletes. He emphasized the potential of youngsters in water sports, noting that three sports associations related to water sports like rowing, canoeing, kayaking, and sailing were invited to the program. Dr. Kumar highlighted the substantial medal potential, referencing the 27 medals won in water sports at the last National Games.

Following the launch, Chief Minister Sangma and Tourism Minister Lyngdoh embarked on the Meghalinor for a refreshing sailing experience on Umiam Lake. The yacht is intended to attract athletes passionate about water sports, and its launch signifies a key step by the government towards introducing more yachts and cruises.
