Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and High Court Illuminate in Blue for World Children’s Day

Shillong, November 20 : The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly took the lead in the state’s observance of World Children’s Day, lighting up its iconic building in blue on November 19 and 20 to symbolize solidarity with children and the commitment to uphold their rights and well-being. The Meghalaya High Court also joined this global initiative, reinforcing the state’s collective dedication to advancing child rights.

The initiative, supported by Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, aligns with UNICEF’s global “Go Blue” campaign, which sees landmark buildings and monuments across India and the world illuminated in blue to advocate for children’s rights.

Observed annually on November 20, World Children’s Day commemorates the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) — the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history.

This year’s theme, “My Day. My Rights.”, calls for greater awareness and integration of children’s rights into everyday life — from ensuring safety and education for a young girl walking to school, to providing emotional and social support for adolescents.

It serves as a reminder that health, education, protection, and participation are not privileges but fundamental rights that must shape every child’s daily reality.

Andrew Simons, Commissioner and Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting the rights of every child. “In solidarity with what is being observed across the globe, we are illuminating the Assembly building in blue to promote the rights, welfare, and development of children,” he said. Simons noted that this symbolic gesture aligns Meghalaya with other national landmarks such as Rashtrapati Bhavanand India Gate, which also turn blue in honour of the day.

Dr. Madhulika Jonathan, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Assam and Northeast, lauded the leadership of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and the Meghalaya High Court for their participation in the global movement. “World Children’s Day is UNICEF’s global day of action for children, by children. Lighting up these institutions in blue reflects Meghalaya’s resolve to put children’s rights at the forefront,” she said.

Dr. Jonathan highlighted UNICEF’s continued partnership with the Government of Meghalaya and the National Health Mission to improve maternal and child health, immunization, and frontline workforce support, ensuring that even children in remote areas receive essential services and life-saving care.

By leading this symbolic statewide observance, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has reinforced its role as a key institution advocating for children’s rights and well-being, echoing the global message that every child’s voice and future matter.
