Shillong, November 5: Meghalaya has received ₹688 crore as its share of central tax devolution after the Union Government released ₹1,09,019 crore to State Governments on Thursday, five days ahead of the scheduled date, to help accelerate development and welfare-related expenditure.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance through the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the regular monthly instalment, originally scheduled for release on November 10, was advanced to November 5 in view of the upcoming festive season. The advance release is intended to provide States, including Meghalaya, with additional financial flexibility to accelerate capital expenditure and meet their developmental and welfare-related spending requirements.
Under the latest allocation, Meghalaya received ₹688 crore, while neighbouring Assam was allocated ₹3,552 crore. Among other northeastern States, Arunachal Pradesh received ₹1,476 crore, Manipur ₹682 crore, Mizoram ₹615 crore, Nagaland ₹524 crore and Sikkim ₹365 crore.
At the national level, Bihar received the highest allocation among the States listed in the release, at ₹10,845 crore, followed by Madhya Pradesh with ₹8,010 crore and Maharashtra with ₹7,022 crore. Rajasthan was allocated ₹6,460 crore, Odisha ₹4,819 crore, Andhra Pradesh ₹4,597 crore, Karnataka ₹4,504 crore and Tamil Nadu ₹4,466 crore.
The Union Government stated that advancing the tax devolution instalment would enable State Governments to undertake capital spending and finance ongoing development and welfare programmes without waiting for the regular disbursement date.
For Meghalaya, the ₹688 crore allocation forms part of its regular share of central taxes and will supplement the State Government’s financial resources for meeting its expenditure commitments. The release is part of the Centre’s regular tax devolution mechanism, through which a share of central tax revenues is transferred to State Governments.
