Meghalaya Recognised as ‘Leader’ in National Startup Ecosystem Ranking

Shillong, January 16 : Meghalaya has been recognised as a Leader under the States’ Startup Ecosystem Ranking (5th Edition), earning national appreciation for its efforts to strengthen entrepreneurship and innovation. The Certificate of Appreciation was conferred during the National Startup Day celebrations at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, marking the 10th anniversary of the Startup India Initiative .

The event was held in the presence of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Chief Guest, and was attended by senior Union officials including Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia, and Joint Secretary Sanjiv from DPIIT. Prominent entrepreneurs and Shark Tank India investors Aman Gupta, Ritesh Agarwal, and Mohit Yadav also took part in the programme .

The DPIIT’s States’ Startup Ecosystem Ranking assesses States and Union Territories on their capacity to support innovation and startup growth. Jurisdictions are grouped into two categories based on population size, and are evaluated across six reform areas and 19 action points including policy support, access to funding, institutional capacity, incubation, mentorship, and market linkages .

The Government of Meghalaya, through PRIME Meghalaya, has played a central role in entrepreneurship development by supporting new startups with financial assistance, incubation, mentorship, and market access. Special focus has been placed on innovation within renewable energy, sustainability, agribusiness, climate action, tourism, and rural livelihoods, while nurturing young entrepreneurs through training and guidance programmes .

Owing to these efforts, Meghalaya has emerged as a leading state in the North East in fostering an enabling environment for innovation-driven enterprises and startup scaling. Officials noted that the recognition signals Meghalaya’s continued determination to build a strong, inclusive, and future-ready entrepreneurial ecosystem .
