Meghalaya Secures Approval for Scientific Coal Mining, 12 More Sites in Pipeline

Shillong, January 29 : In a significant development for the state’s economy, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced today that the government has secured approval for scientific coal mining operations in the state. This comes after close collaboration with the Ministry of Coal, fulfilling a key commitment made by the government.

Three escrow agreements were signed between the Controller of Coal, Government of India, and project proponents for mining sites at Pyndengshalang in West Khasi Hills, Saryngkham in East Jaintia Hills, and Lumiakhi Wahsarang in East Jaintia Hills. These agreements mark a crucial step towards the commencement of mining activities at these locations.

“Today marks a monumental and historic day for Meghalaya!” exclaimed CM Sangma in a statement. “As promised, our government has fulfilled its commitment to securing approval for scientific coal mining operations in the state by working closely with the Ministry of Coal.”

The Chief Minister also revealed that approvals for 12 more mining applications are in advanced stages, with active pursuit ongoing through the combined efforts of project proponents and the Department of Mining and Geology.

“This is a significant stride toward Meghalaya’s progress!” CM Sangma added, highlighting the importance of this development for the state’s overall growth and prosperity.
