Shillong, March 26: Meghalaya is all set to host the inaugural edition of the Indian Sailing League (ISL) at Umiam Lake, marking a major milestone in the state’s growing reputation as a hub for water sports and adventure tourism.
The five-day event, scheduled from March 27 to March 31, 2026, will be held at the Orchid Water Sports Complex, Umiam. A total of 14 teams comprising 182 sailors, including 58 international participants from eight countries, will compete in the league.
The league will follow a franchise-based model, featuring teams from across India such as Shillong Umiam Navigators, Deccan Skippers, Goa Mariners, Chennai Sailing Knights, Pune Peshwas, and Mumbai Meridians, among others.
The inaugural edition carries a prize pool exceeding ₹1.5 crore, with team rewards going up to ₹21 lakh and individual prizes reaching up to ₹1.5 lakh.
The selection of Umiam as the venue reflects Meghalaya’s strategic push to develop world-class water sports infrastructure and promote adventure tourism. The event is expected to further strengthen the state’s position as a preferred destination for national and international sporting events.
In addition to the competition, the event will feature performances by artists from the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroots Music Programme (CM-MGMP), offering visitors a blend of sports, culture, and scenic beauty.
The Indian Sailing League 2026 is expected to usher in a new era for competitive sailing in India, with dynamic race formats testing participants on strategy, speed, and manoeuvring under varying wind conditions.
The event is anticipated to attract tourists and sports enthusiasts alike, showcasing Meghalaya as one of India’s most scenic and emerging sporting destinations.
