Shillong, Janaury 30 : The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has recommended payment of compensation to victims in connection with alleged human rights violations during a police operation at Rimpu Bagan in Tura, West Garo Hills District.
According to the Secretary L. Ch. Marak, the Commission had registered 30 cases relating to complaints of human rights violations arising out of the operation and detention of persons by the police on July 22, 2022. Of these, 15 cases were subsequently withdrawn by the complainants.An inquiry was conducted by the Commission into the remaining 15 cases. After examining evidence and hearing submissions from both parties, the MHRC passed its final order on January 29, 2026.
The order has been addressed to the Principal Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Home (Police) Department. In its recommendation, the Commission has called for payment of compensation amounting to Rs. 50,000 each to the complainants, citing violation of human rights. The recommendation has been made under Section 18(e) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
