Missing woman found dead near forest cave after 16 days in SWKH

Shillong, July 20: The body of a 76-year-old woman, identified as Joit Kharlyngdoh of Jakrem village in South West Khasi Hills district, was recovered on Sunday after she had remained missing for 16 days.

According to reports, her body was discovered by villagers in a forested area known as Motbih Pamske Cave under Jakrem village at around 3:00 pm.

Joit Kharlyngdoh had been missing since the evening of July 4, 2026, prompting an extensive search by villagers and the police.

Jakrem village Myntri, Pascal Wahlang, said the entire village had been tirelessly searching for the elderly woman since the day she disappeared. Despite continuous efforts, no trace of her was found.

He added that on July 15, villagers, in coordination with the police, conducted another intensive search operation with the assistance of a K9 dog squad. However, the operation did not yield any results.

The breakthrough came on July 20 at around 2:00 pm when villagers stumbled upon the body and immediately informed the police.

Police have since reached the spot and initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. Further details are awaited.
