NEC Announces Major Developments for Meghalaya and North East

Shillong, September 03 : The North Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned ₹51.178 lakh as gap funding for residential costs under a new Skill Training project in the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics (AVGC), and IT-ITES sectors. Approved on August 8, 2025, the project will be implemented by the North Eastern Region Community Resources Management Society (NERCORMS), Shillong.

The initiative aims to train and certify 400 youth across North Eastern states, equipping them with skills in animation, VFX, game design, and graphic storytelling. Supported under PMKVY 4.0 guidelines, the project is designed to boost employability, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods.

A second installment of ₹233 lakh was released on August 8, 2025, for the Establishment of Scientific Smoked Meat Production Units. The project, with a total sanction of ₹484.67 lakh, will set up 17 scientific smoke houses in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.

These units are expected to produce 867 MT of dried pork annually, create 34 direct jobs, and indirectly benefit nearly 1,921 people. Crucially, the project aims to reduce carcinogen levels in smoked meat, lowering risks of nasopharyngeal and digestive cancers.

he Study on Mobile and Internet Connectivity in Villages of North East India, conducted by NERCORMS, was successfully completed and closed on August 8, 2025. The findings are expected to guide improvements in digital infrastructure across the region.

A State-level Workshop for Students on the conservation of indigenous fruits, vegetables, medicinal, and aromatic plants was held in East Khasi Hills, with funding of ₹8 lakh. The event concluded successfully on August 19, 2025.

A State-level Workshop on Geographical Indication (GI) products and user authorization for farmers in Meghalaya was organized by NERAMAC, supported with ₹8.85 lakh, and completed on August 19, 2025.
