NEHU clarifies UG admission process for affiliated colleges, stresses strict compliance with CUET guidelines

Shillong, May 25: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has issued a clarification regarding admissions to Undergraduate (UG) programmes in colleges affiliated to the University for the academic session 2026–27, reiterating that all institutions must strictly follow the Admission Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the University and the Central Admission Committee (CAC).

The clarification comes in reference to communications issued by the Central Admission Committee vide Letter No. CAC/NEHU/2026–01 dated April 29, 2026, Letter No. CAC/NEHU/2026–02 dated May 04, 2026, and a communication from the Director, College Development Council (CDC), NEHU, dated May 15, 2026, addressed to Principals of all affiliated colleges.

According to NEHU, the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) score is mandatory for admission to Undergraduate programmes in Central Universities and their affiliated colleges, as per directives of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The University stated that admissions for the academic session 2026–27 must be conducted strictly on the basis of CUET (UG) 2026 scores during the first round of admissions.

The University observed that confusion had arisen in certain quarters regarding admissions based solely on Class XII examination results. In this regard, NEHU clarified that affiliated colleges must not conduct spot, provisional, or final admissions before the declaration of CUET (UG) 2026 results.

NEHU further clarified that admissions of non-CUET candidates under the UGC SOP may be undertaken only after all eligible CUET-based applicants have been accommodated and vacancies continue to remain. Such admissions, it stated, must strictly adhere to the procedures laid down in the UGC SOP and the University’s Admission Guidelines.

The communication issued by the Director, CDC, NEHU, also reminded affiliated colleges that CUET scores are mandatory for admissions to both UG and PG programmes and urged institutions to comply with the guidelines issued by the Central Admission Committee.

Reiterating its stand, the University urged all affiliated colleges and their managements to ensure strict compliance with the SOPs and guidelines communicated from time to time to maintain a fair, transparent, and uniform admission process across all affiliated colleges.

NEHU also cautioned that non-compliance with the notified guidelines may invite appropriate action under University regulations.

The University appealed to students, parents, and stakeholders not to be misled by unofficial information and advised them to rely only on official notifications and communications issued by the University and affiliated colleges in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
