Shillong, June 5 : The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Mawdiangdiang, today hosted a tree plantation program as part of World Environment Day 2025, with a focus on the theme ‘End Plastic Pollution’. The event, organized in collaboration with the Social Forestry and Environment Wing, Meghalaya, was graced by the presence of Meghalaya Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang.
In his address, Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang reminded the gathering that World Environment Day originates from a 1972 resolution and has been celebrated for 53 years. He emphasized, “This is nothing but a commitment towards the importance of practicing ecological balance and preserving our environment, which is the most crucial aspect for us.”
Wahlang also shed light on the ongoing challenges in keeping the Wah Umkhrah river clean, despite efforts like installing barricades to prevent littering. He lauded the environmental-conscious individuals who dedicate their weekends to cleaning the river. The Chief Secretary acknowledged the existing waste collection system, which transports waste to landfills in Mawiong, yet noted with concern that people continue to disregard this system and litter in the river.
Expressing his delight in engaging with students, Wahlang appealed to them to take the lead in educating others about environmental conservation through outreach programs. He also urged teachers to facilitate these crucial initiatives. Furthermore, he announced new initiatives to clean 17 drains in Shillong, which are expected to significantly improve water quality. Additionally, the Wah Umkhrah beautification scheme has been launched, with its positive impact anticipated to be visible within the coming year.
The Chief Secretary reiterated the importance of tree plantation, maintaining ecological balance, and keeping the environment clean. He advised promoting sustainable practices, raising awareness, and collectively taking care of the environment, stressing that “By working together, the community can make a significant difference.” During the program, students from various schools were recognized and awarded for their participation in different environmental activities.
