Shillong, October 15: The Department of Neurology at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong, has brought recognition to Meghalaya after its neurologists won the prestigious B.C. Roy Gold Medal twice within five years for their contributions to neurological research.
The awards were presented at the annual conferences of the Association of Neuroscientists of Eastern India (ANEICON), recognising significant research contributions in the field of neuroscience. The first honour came during ANEICON 2021 in Patna, Bihar, when Dr. B. Synmon received the B.C. Roy Gold Medal for research on Myasthenia Gravis, a neurological disorder affecting communication between nerves and muscles.
Five years later, Dr. Aakanksha secured the same prestigious award at ANEICON 2026, held in Ranchi, Jharkhand, from October 9 to 11, for research on neuro-infections. The achievement highlights the department’s continued commitment to advancing neurological research and addressing critical clinical challenges through evidence-based medical practices.
NEIGRIHMS, one of the leading medical institutions in Northeast India, plays an important role in providing specialised neurological care, training healthcare professionals and conducting research relevant to the region’s healthcare needs. Congratulating the award recipients and the Department of Neurology, NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. Nalin Mehta appreciated their dedication to research and academic excellence. He emphasised the importance of sustained scientific research in improving the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders.
The recognition at two major neuroscience conferences within five years underscores the department’s contribution to medical research and brings further distinction to NEIGRIHMS and Meghalaya, while highlighting the importance of strengthening specialised healthcare services across Northeast India.
