Shillong, April 07 : The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), in collaboration with the Meghalaya State TB Control Society, successfully organized two comprehensive screening and general health camps. These camps were a key component of the ongoing "100 Days TB Campaign" within the region, demonstrating a concerted effort to combat tuberculosis through proactive community engagement.
NEIGRIHMS played a crucial role by deploying essential human resources, including doctors and medical interns, ensuring that the screening procedures were conducted with professional expertise. Complementing this, the Meghalaya State TB Control Society provided the necessary logistical support and allied healthcare staff, creating a synergistic partnership vital for the efficient execution of the health camps.
The first health camp was meticulously organized on April 4, 2026, in the area of Nongmensong. During this event, a total of 44 screening chest X-rays were performed on community members. Out of these, eight X-ray reports indicated abnormal findings, necessitating further investigation. Consequently, sputum testing was promptly initiated for these eight individuals to ascertain the presence of tuberculosis or other respiratory conditions.
Following the success of the first camp, a second health camp was conducted on April 6, 2026, in Mawryngkneng. A total of 72 people were screened in this session with 9 abnormal Chest X-Rays, sputum samples were collected for abnormal individuals. This camp also focused on general health examinations, providing broader healthcare services to the community. A total of 32 patients benefited from these general health interventions, reflecting the ongoing commitment to public health beyond just TB screening.
Director NEIGRIHMS, Prof. Nalin Mehta applauded the efforts done by NEIGRIHMS. Prof. Mehta further added that these camps represent a significant step in the “100 Days TB Campaign” highlighting the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between medical institutions and state health bodies in delivering vital health services and actively working towards the elimination of tuberculosis in Meghalaya.
