NESO Expresses Concern Over Ongoing Kuki-Naga Conflict in Manipur

Guwahati, May 20: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has expressed grave concern over the continuing conflict between the Kukis and Nagas in Manipur, condemning repeated incidents of violence, killings, abductions and intimidation of innocent civilians.

A meeting of NESO was convened in Guwahati on May 20 and hosted by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) to deliberate on the prevailing situation in Manipur. Following detailed discussions, NESO adopted a series of resolutions, including strong condemnation of violence against innocent civilians and attacks on church leaders. The organisation stated that violence against unarmed civilians on peace missions “can never be justified.”

NESO also appealed for the unconditional release of all hostages reportedly being held and urged that no harm be inflicted upon them. The organisation further questioned the role of the Central Government, alleging inaction and failure to effectively address the prolonged conflict. NESO stated that several people have remained missing and untraceable since the beginning of the violence and demanded that the government take all necessary measures to ascertain their whereabouts.

Calling for peace and restoration of normalcy, NESO appealed to all communities and stakeholders to reject violence and retaliation and instead work collectively towards justice, peace and stability in Manipur. The meeting concluded with an affirmation to continue standing for peace, restoration of normalcy and the dignity of all innocent civilians affected by the conflict.

The meeting was attended by representatives of member organisations including the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) and the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF).
