Mawhati, January 25 : Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the new Mawhati Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Block at a program held in Umsohlait today. Also present were Minister of C&RD Abu Taher Mondol, MLA of Mawhati Charles Marngar, and MLA of Umsning Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh.
In his inaugural address, CM Sangma conveyed his greetings to the people of Mawhati, stating that the new block reflects the government’s commitment to decentralizing administration and bringing services closer to the people. He explained that the large population previously served by the Umsning C&RD Block, requiring some residents to travel over 100 kilometers to reach the block office, necessitated the creation of the Mawhati block. He emphasized that the new block will benefit not only Mawhati residents but also those from 66 villages of Umsning that now fall under its jurisdiction.
The Chief Minister also spoke about ongoing administrative reforms aimed at providing more government services through block offices, reducing the need for people to travel to sub-division or district headquarters. He announced that the sanction for the Mawhati block office building would be issued soon to ensure its prompt operationalization. He also highlighted development projects planned for the area, most notably the Umsning-Mawhati road, which will serve as an important economic and administrative corridor.
CM Sangma urged community members to partner with the government in development programs and encouraged officials working in the Mawhati C&RD Block to serve the people with kindness and empathy.
Minister Mondol stated that the new infrastructure would boost economic activity in the region and that the C&RD Block would not only bring administration closer to the people but also create livelihood opportunities. He emphasized the importance of community partnership in achieving the state’s goal of a 10 billion dollar economy, noting that the state’s overall economy is dependent on the economic development of rural Meghalaya. He explained that the purpose of establishing blocks is to ensure government machinery reaches the grassroots level and provides support for various government missions.
Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar described the Mawhati C&RD Block as a “beacon of hope,” a “symbol of progress,” and a “testament of a bright future,” bringing services to youth, farmers, women, and all residents of Mawhati. He expressed gratitude to the government for establishing the block, acknowledging it as a result of collective effort.
The Chief Minister and other dignitaries also distributed M-Tabs to Class 11 students during the event. The Mawhati C&RD Block is the 56th and newest block in the state.
