Shillong, June 4: The Jaintia Coal Miner and Dealer Association (JCMDA) on Thursday received the backing of several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and pressure groups from East Jaintia Hills in its campaign for the resumption of coal mining through Small Underground Scientific Coal Mining.
At a meeting held with various organisations, the Association said the united support has strengthened its ongoing movement aimed at restoring the livelihoods of thousands of families affected by the prolonged closure of coal mining activities in the district.
Expressing gratitude to the participating groups, JCMDA stated that many residents, particularly economically vulnerable families, have suffered significant hardships due to the halt in mining operations. The Association maintained that the early resumption of safe and scientific mining is essential for the livelihood, dignity and future of the people dependent on the sector.
The Association noted that while the government has recently indicated through media reports that it is taking steps on the issue, it hopes such initiatives are sincere and not merely politically motivated ahead of elections. JCMDA urged the government to come forward with concrete and constructive measures before the expiry of the three-month timeline set by the Association.
During the meeting, the Association also observed that certain organisations that had remained silent on the issue for years have become active only after witnessing the large turnout of more than 10,000 people at the rally organised by JCMDA on April 7, 2026. It alleged that some groups may be attempting to capitalise on the movement for personal interests or hidden agendas.
Appealing for unity, the Association called on all stakeholders to work together towards the common objective of securing the welfare of coal miners, suppliers and workers.
“United we stand, divided we fall. Let us not weaken our collective voice at this critical time,” the Association stated.
JCMDA further reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing a responsible and solution-oriented movement, highlighting several initiatives already undertaken during the three-month period. These include the preparation of a scientific underground mining plan and engagements with the Deputy Chief Minister, officials of the Department of Mining and Geology (DMR), and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
The Association once again urged the Meghalaya Government and JHADC to honour the stipulated timeline and announce a practical policy for Small Underground Scientific Coal Mining at the earliest.
The organisations extending support to the movement include the Jaintia Students Movement (JSM), Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Meghalaya People United Front (MPUF), Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Jaintia National Council (JNC), Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Hima Sutnga Youth Front (HSYF), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), East Jaintia Hills Coal and Minerals Supplier Association (EJHCMSA), Synjuk Waheh Shnong East Jaintia Hills (SWSEJH), Truck Owner and Supplier Association (TOSA), and the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP).
