Shillong, October 15 : The National Health Mission (NHM) Employees Association of Meghalaya inaugurated the NHM Sports Meet 2025today at the Nongkseh Sports Ground, Shillong. The multi-day event is being celebrated under the theme “Wellness through Sports, Service through Health”, emphasizing the vital link between physical fitness and effective healthcare service.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Wailadmiki Shylla, Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, and Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, who served as the Chief Guest.
In his address, Shylla congratulated the NHM employees for organizing the event and commended their enthusiasm and teamwork. “As employees in the health department, we always encourage and urge the people to live a healthy lifestyle. Today, you have shown that we practice what we preach,” he said.
The Minister acknowledged the dedication of healthcare workers and assured them that their commitment and service are deeply valued by the Government. He encouraged all health professionals to remain resilient and to continue serving with passion and perseverance.
Carol Iangrai, Joint Director of Health Services, highlighted the importance of such gatherings in promoting physical, mental, and social well-being. “Health is not just the absence of illness but a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being,” she said.
She commended the NHM for its contributions in strengthening healthcare delivery across Meghalaya and India. Stressing on the growing threat of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Ms. Iangrai noted that sports instill discipline, consistency, and teamwork, which are crucial for healthy living and disease prevention.
M. Thangkhiew, Headman of Nongkseh and General Secretary of the Nongkseh Sports Social and Cultural Hub, welcomed participants and highlighted the community’s pride in hosting the event. “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” he said, echoing the event’s theme of a healthy mind and body.
He also mentioned that the Nongkseh locality, with around 1,500 households and 7,000 residents, looks forward to continued improvement in local healthcare facilities, underscoring the synergy between community engagement and public health.
The NHM Sports Meet 2025 will run from October 15 to 17, featuring various sporting events designed to promote teamwork, camaraderie, and fitness among health workers.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Edison Khymdeit, Sports Organising Member and President, DEC, NEAM, EKH, appreciated the contributions of all participants and urged everyone to embrace a lifestyle of wellness through physical activity.
The event reaffirmed the Health Department’s commitment to the holistic well-being of its workforce — recognizing that healthier healthcare workers lead to a healthier society.
