No Permanent Structures Planned at Lumpongdeng: Conrad Sangma

Shillong, April 09: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has clarified that under the agreement signed by the State Government through the Tourism Department, there will be no permanent construction on Lumpongdeng Island.

In a statement issued to the media through a video message following the indefinite hunger strike staged by members of the Green Tech Foundation outside the Secretariat in Shillong on Thursday, the Chief Minister further explained that the agreement only permits temporary structures such as small stalls and removable pandals. These can be dismantled at any time after short-term events lasting about a week or up to 10 days, similar to arrangements at Ward’s Lake, to ensure no harm is caused to the surrounding flora and fauna on the island.

“I would like to reassure the public not to be concerned, as some individuals are attempting to mislead people by claiming that a Consent to Establish (CTE) has already been granted. However, this approval is subject to certain conditions set by the Forest Department of the State Government,” he stated.
