“NO PROCESSION OR ASSEMBLY ZONE” WITHIN 200M OF SECRETARIAT, RAJ BHAVAN

Shillong, August 30 : The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills District, Shillong has imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in the city and district. This order prohibits any person or group of persons from holding demonstrations or rallies within 200 meters of the Meghalaya Secretariat Building and Raj Bhavan.

The order also prohibits the carrying of arms and any other lethal weapons or any other item/materials having the potential to be used as a weapon which can likely cause grievous injury or harm to any person(s).

The order will not be applicable to the security forces on duty. Any violation of the said order will attract penal provisions under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The order has been issued in view of the information received that some organizations will be organizing demonstrations in different parts of the district. The District Magistrate is of the opinion that such demonstrations, if allowed to be held in the “No Procession or Assembly Zone”, will cause obstruction, hinder the movement of traffic and leads to crowding and congestion, and may also result in disturbance of the public places and tranquility.

The order will come into force with immediate effect and until further orders.
