Shillong, May 18: The National People’s Party (NPP) has responded to recent statements made by Bernard Rimpu N. Marak concerning the bail granted to certain individuals in an ongoing case, asserting that judicial decisions are taken independently under the rule of law.
In a statement issued by NPP Garo Hills Region spokesperson and GHADC MDC Aldo A. Sangma, the party stated that in a democratic system, courts take decisions based on legal principles and available facts, while the executive government has no role in determining judicial outcomes, including the granting of bail.
The party further clarified that bail is a legal provision under the law and should not be construed as acquittal or exoneration. It added that investigations in the matter are still continuing and due legal process will take its course.
The NPP also appealed to political leaders and public representatives to exercise restraint and responsibility while commenting on sensitive legal matters, stating that such caution is necessary to uphold public confidence in democratic institutions and prevent misunderstanding among the public.
Highlighting Meghalaya’s development trajectory, the party said the state has witnessed significant progress through peace, stability and the collective efforts of citizens and governments.
It noted that both the State and Central Governments have continued to focus on development, infrastructure, welfare and economic growth for all sections of society.
At a time when Meghalaya is moving forward on multiple fronts, the NPP appeals to all political stakeholders to maintain healthy democratic discourse and work constructively in the larger interest of the State and its people,” the statement said.
The party also reaffirmed its commitment to peace, communal harmony, constitutional values and inclusive development for every citizen of Meghalaya.
