Shillong, March 30: Police in East Khasi Hills launched a major crackdown on alleged prostitution activities in the Khyndai Lad area, detaining 16 individuals during a coordinated operation on Saturday. The raid followed after multiple complaints from local residents, who alleged that sex trade activities were taking place near places of worship in Shillong, including churches and a gurudwara. Authorities also raised concerns over the rising risk of HIV infections in the city.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, stated that the raid was initiated to address these growing concerns and maintain public order.
The police conducted raids across several locations, including Khyndai Lad near Pegasus Hotel, Near Presbyterian English Service Church, opposite SBI Main Branch, Areas near MBOSE office in Lachaumiere and IGP Point.
The operation was led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations) Ivan Diengdoh, along with Deputy Superintendent of Police (WCC) Joyti Wahlang, and officers from Sadar, Women police, and Laitumkhrah Police Stations.
During the raid, police detained 16 individuals suspected of involvement in prostitution and related activities. Among them, 4 were identified as alleged pimps (agents) facilitating the trade. Authorities also seized 1 Swift Dzire car and 2 scooties believed to have been used in the illegal activities.
A case has been registered at Sadar Police Station under Sections 4, 5, 7, and 8 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act and Section 110 of the Meghalaya Police Act. Police confirmed that further investigation is underway.
