Shillong, January 31 : Meghalaya Police are investigating a series of crimes reported across the state, including land disputes, theft, assault, and banking fraud.
East Khasi Hills:
- Construction Fraud: A resident of Mawlai Mawroh filed a complaint alleging that Syed Asfaque Nawas, who was hired to construct a modular kitchen, closet, and supply PVC doors and windows, had received ₹26.52 lakh but failed to complete the project and returned the money.
- Environmental Violation: The DFO of East Khasi Hills & Ri-Bhoi (T) Division filed a complaint against T. Marbañiang for constructing a retaining wall that encroaches upon the Umkhrah River and impacts the flow of a stream. The complaint also alleges that Marbañiang is illegally claiming ownership of the land over which the stream flows.
Eastern West Khasi Hills:
- Land Dispute and Theft: A resident of a village in Eastern West Khasi Hills filed a complaint against a woman from Ri-Bhoi District, alleging that she stole his original land document (“patta”), claimed ownership of his land, and demanded money from him.
East Jaintia Hills:
- Homicide: A woman lodged an FIR reporting the discovery of the body of Ngilress Dkhar in the basement of her house in a locality in East Jaintia Hills.
West Garo Hills:
- Banking Fraud: The Manager of the SBI Hallidayganj Branch reported an incident on January 29 where a customer attempted to withdraw money from their account via internet banking despite insufficient funds. Due to a server error, ₹43,000 was debited from SBI Hallidayganj Branch INB BGL Account. Attempts by the bank to contact the customer and refund the money have been unsuccessful.
- Assault in Prison: The Deputy Superintendent of Prison & Correctional Home reported that UTP Bath N. Marak assaulted another UTP, Kentereng Rabha, inside the prison. Rabha sustained injuries and was admitted to CH Tura.
- Cattle Theft: Alfaz Sheikh reported the theft of his cattle from Charkasaripara village. Two suspects, Kurfan Ali (25 years old) and Azibor Sk (29 years old), were apprehended by local residents along with the stolen cattle and handed over to the police.
