Shillong, March 20 : The East Khasi Hills Police have issued a public advisory following the circulation of a video on social media showing a young child riding a battery-operated bike on a national highway.
According to the police, the child, believed to be between 4 to 6 years old, was seen riding on a public road—an act that poses serious safety risks and violates provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
Police highlighted that young children lack the necessary judgment to navigate fast-moving traffic and may not understand road signals, lane discipline, or blind spots.
They further warned that the small size of such vehicles makes them less visible to other drivers, increasing the risk of accidents. Even minor collisions, authorities said, could result in serious injuries.
Clear Advisory to Parents
The police have strongly advised that children below 18 years should not ride or drive independently on public roads.
Such activities should be limited to controlled environments like parks, playgrounds, or residential compounds, and only under adult supervision.
Legal Action and Penalties
The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) will take cognizance of such violations, and parents or guardians will be held accountable.
Under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act (Amended 2019), offenders may face imprisonment of up to three years along with a fine of ₹25,000.
Public Urged to Act Responsibly
Authorities have urged the public to ensure the safety of children and strictly follow traffic laws to prevent avoidable accidents.
