Shillong, June 13 : The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills, Rosetta Mary Kurbah, IAS, today issued an order under Section 163 BNSS prohibiting demonstrations and rallies within a 200-meter radius of the Meghalaya Secretariat building, Additional Secretariat building, and Raj Bhavan in Shillong. The order also bans the carrying of arms or any lethal weapons that could cause harm.
The directive comes in response to observations that various NGOs, groups, and organizations frequently conduct processions, rallies, and demonstrations within the district. The District Magistrate is of the opinion that such gatherings, if permitted, could obstruct traffic, lead to crowding and congestion, and potentially disturb public peace and tranquility.
The order has been passed ex parte, meaning without prior notice to the affected parties, due to the urgency of the matter. It comes into immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders are issued.
Any violation of this order will result in penal provisions under Section 223 of the BNS and other relevant sections as deemed appropriate.
