Raj Bhavan Renamed as Lok Bhavan, Shillong

Shillong, December 2 : The iconic Raj Bhavan, Shillong has officially been renamed Lok Bhavan, Shillong, following a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. The notification, issued by the Governor’s Secretariat, Meghalaya, came into effect immediately on December 2, 2025.

According to the notification signed by H.C. Chaudhary, IFS, Principal Secretary to the Governor of Meghalaya, the change was made in pursuance of communication from the Ministry of Home Affairs (Memo No. 7/10/2025) dated November 25, 2025.

The order states, “It is hereby notified that ‘Raj Bhavan, Shillong’ has been re-named as ‘Lok Bhavan, Shillong’. ‘Raj Bhavan, Shillong’ shall henceforth be referred to only as ‘Lok Bhavan, Shillong’.”

With this renaming, Meghalaya joins the list of several Indian states that have recently adopted the name “Lok Bhavan” for the Governor’s official residence, symbolising a shift towards a more people-centric and inclusive governance ethos.

The notification emphasizes that the change comes into force with immediate effect, marking a historic rebranding of one of Meghalaya’s most distinguished institutions.
