RBI EXTENDS WINDOW FOR DEPOSIT/EXCHANGE OF ₹2000 BANKNOTES

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that the facility for deposit and/or exchange of ₹2000 banknotes will continue to be available at the 19 Issue Offices of the RBI. The RBI has also urged the public to use post offices to send ₹2000 banknotes.

The RBI had announced the withdrawal of ₹2000 denomination banknotes from circulation in May 2023. The window for deposit and/or exchange of the ₹2000 banknotes was initially available at all bank branches in the country upto September 30, 2023, which was later extended upto October 07, 2023. However, the facility for exchange of the ₹2000 banknotes continued to be available at the 19 Issue Offices of the RBI.

As of October 31, 2023, more than 97% of the ₹2000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, have been returned. The total value of ₹2000 banknotes in circulation has declined from ₹3.56 lakh crore to ₹0.10 lakh crore.

The RBI has urged the public to avail the facility of sending the ₹2000 banknotes through post offices of India Post. This will obviate the need for travel to RBI Offices for deposit/exchange of the ₹2000 banknotes.

The ₹2000 banknotes continue to be legal tender.
