REGULATED POWER SHUTDOWN UNDERWAY IN MEGHALAYA AS STATE PUSHES MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADE

Shillong, December 11 : The Government of Meghalaya announced that a regulated electrical shutdown is currently in progress across Shillong and Tura as part of the ongoing Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a large-scale initiative designed to strengthen the state’s power infrastructure.

Under the RDSS project—valued at ₹900 crore—the state will install around 2,600 new transformers, replace 3,800 km of ageing wires, and lay 4,300 km of new electrical lines. Officials say the effort is aimed at creating a more stable and reliable electricity supply for households and businesses across Meghalaya.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma assured citizens that the government is working closely with MeECL and the Power Department to reduce inconvenience during the shutdown. Improved communication and timely updates have been prioritized to keep the public informed.

“We understand that this shutdown may cause inconvenience, but it is a necessary step towards achieving our goal of providing better power infrastructure for the people of Meghalaya,” the Chief Minister said.

The government expressed gratitude for the public’s patience and cooperation, emphasizing that the benefits of the RDSS project will soon be visible in the form of a significantly improved and more reliable power supply.
