Courier Service Employee Robbed, Online Fraud, and Vehicle Thefts Plague Meghalaya

Shillong, February 28 : A spate of criminal activities has been reported across Meghalaya, ranging from violent assaults to sophisticated online scams and vehicle thefts.

  • Border Robbery and Attempted Robbery: A courier service employee has been the target of two robbery attempts near the Indo-Bangladesh border in the Amlympiang area of West Jaintia Hills, leading to the arrest of a Bangladeshi national.
    The employee reported that on February 19th, four unidentified individuals robbed him while he was delivering items near the international border. Subsequently, on February 26th, he was targeted again by unidentified individuals attempting to rob him near Riahjalong village.
    Following investigations, police arrested Sumon Bushias (19), a Bangladeshi national, from Amlympiang village on February 26th in connection with the incidents.
  • Online Fraud: A resident of Tura, West Garo Hills, has reported being defrauded of ₹1,36,95,000 in a sophisticated online scam involving individuals impersonating Delhi Police officers.
    According to the complaint filed, the victim received anonymous WhatsApp calls on February 19th. The callers falsely identified themselves as police officers from Delhi Police Sarojini Nagar. They convinced the victim that her name was involved in criminal activities and proceeded to deceive her into transferring the large sum of money.
  • Attempted Theft: Abdul Shah (24) was caught attempting to steal from Om Prakash Thakur’s residence in Mawbah, Shillong.
  • Motorcycle Theft: Shankar Ray’s motorcycle (ML-05W-8476) was stolen from Lower Lumparing, Shillong.
  • Scooter Theft: Birenstar Khymdeit’s scooter (ML-05AC-3479) was stolen from Umran Niangbyrnai, Ri-Bhoi.
  • Unauthorized Bank Transactions: A resident reported unauthorized transactions totaling ₹24,000 from their SBI account.
  • Scooter Theft: Uttom Marak’s scooter(AS-18M-7147) was stolen from his residential premises at Resu Rangmanggre, North Garo Hills.

Police investigations are underway for all reported incidents.
