Shillong, May 25: Ri-Bhoi Police have arrested a man from Rajasthan in connection with a cyber fraud case involving impersonation of an IPS officer through a fake social media profile.
According to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi District, the accused allegedly impersonated IPS officer Vivekanand Singh Rathore through a fake social media account and fraudulently contacted the victim, who later transferred money and was subsequently defrauded.
Police said a case was registered at Nongpoh Police Station vide Nongpoh PS Case No. 28(05)2026 under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with Sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act.
In a major breakthrough, police arrested one accused identified as Jahul Ali, son of Farukh Khan and a resident of Kakrali Meo in Alwar district of Rajasthan.
The accused was arrested from Jaipur, Rajasthan on May 23 following sustained investigation and technical surveillance conducted by the police.
Authorities informed that further investigation into the case is currently underway.
