Sails Unfurl in Umiam Lake : 3rd YAI North East Regatta 2025

Shillong, May 25 : The tranquil waters of Umiam Lake turned into a lively canvas of vibrant sails as the 3rd YAI North East Regatta 2025 officially launched in Meghalaya. Hosted by the Umiam Sailing Club in collaboration with the UDAY Sailing Foundation, the prestigious event enjoys the patronage of the Yachting Association of India (YAI)and the support of the International 420 Class Association of India.

The regatta, a marquee event in India’s Junior National Ranking calendar, will continue until May 29, featuring young sailing talent from across the country. With stakes high, performances here will significantly impact National Squad selections for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games.

Lt Gen TSA Narayanan, AVSM, Vice President of YAI, graced the opening ceremony as Chief Guest, applauding the growing prominence of sailing in the Northeast. “The focus on creating a professional, yet sailor-friendly environment has set a new benchmark for regional regattas in India,” he said, commending the Umiam Sailing Club, which has fielded 13 sailors, the third-largest contingent at the event.

Dr Vijay Kumar D., IAS, Commissioner & Secretary of Tourism and Chairman of the Umiam Sailing Club, highlighted the government’s long-term vision for the region. “We aim to balance sustainability with tourism and economic growth. Umiam Lake has been earmarked as a permanent venue for water sports including rowing and sailing, especially with Meghalaya set to host the National Games in 2027,” he noted.

With 79 sailors from nine top sailing clubs competing in five categories across 11 classes, the regatta features a diverse and inclusive lineup—25 women sailors and 9 novices among them. The competition is being officiated by international judges, race officers, and a national measurer, reinforcing its world-class standards.

The scenic beauty of Umiam Lake combined with the spirit of youthful competition is expected to deliver thrilling races and unforgettable memories at this year’s regatta—for both participants and spectators alike.
