Shillong, June 5: Saindur Enviro Pvt. Ltd. observed World Environment Day 2026 by organizing a plantation drive and environmental awareness programme at Mawtnum Presbyterian Centenary Memorial Secondary School in Mawtnum Village, Ri-Bhoi district.
The programme began with a welcome address by Headmaster Micheal Manner, who highlighted the significance of World Environment Day and informed participants about this year’s global theme, “Climate Action – Now for Climate.” The event was attended by Mawtnum Village Headman Badhok Nongmalieh, Saindur Enviro Co-founder and Director Dr. Vivek Kumar, students, and members of the teaching staff.
Addressing the gathering, Headman Badhok Nongmalieh stressed the importance of environmental protection and community participation in conservation efforts. He urged residents to safeguard local streams and rivers, maintain clean surroundings, and promote responsible environmental stewardship.
Speaking to students and teachers, Dr. Vivek Kumar said the World Environment Day theme serves as a reminder of the growing challenges posed by climate change, including rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and biodiversity loss. He emphasized that while governments and institutions play an important role, meaningful environmental change begins with individual actions.
Dr. Kumar encouraged students to adopt sustainable practices such as conserving energy, reducing plastic use, saving water, using environmentally friendly modes of transport, and planting trees. He noted that collective action through small individual efforts can make a significant contribution to climate action. He also called upon students to become environmental ambassadors within their families and communities.
During the programme, Dr. Kumar introduced the “Tag the Tree” initiative, under which each sapling planted would be named after the student or group responsible for planting it, encouraging long-term care and monitoring of the trees.
The awareness programme was followed by a plantation drive in which students, teachers, and guests planted fruit-bearing saplings across the school campus. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by the Headmaster, who expressed appreciation to all participants and reiterated the importance of collective efforts in building a cleaner, greener, and more climate-resilient future.
