Tura, April 02 – The State Council of Science, Technology & Environment (SCSTE), Meghalaya in collaboration with the Shillong Science Centre celebrated National Science Day 2025 underthe theme “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for Viksit Bharat” at the ISBT, Tura on 29 March, 2025. The event witnessed the esteemed presence of Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, as the Chief Guest, along with Thomas A. Sangma, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, as the Guest of Honour. Also present were Gunanka D. B, Member Secretary, SCSTE Meghalaya, and Jagdish Chelani, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills.
In his address, Conrad K Sangma emphasized the pivotal role of innovation and entrepreneurship in driving economic growth, citing successful global examples such as Japan and South Korea. He highlighted the Indian government’s and Meghalaya’s proactive initiatives in promoting STEM education and youth development. A significant step in this direction is the expansion of science streams in government colleges to bridge previous gaps in scientific education.
The Chief Minister outlined the state’s substantial investments in entrepreneurship, sports, and music through flagship programs like CM Elevate, PRIME, and the Grassroots Music Program, which have positioned Meghalaya as a top-performing state in fostering entrepreneurship. He also underscored the importance of competitions in science, technology, and mathematics as platforms for students to innovate. The government is committed to posing real-world challenges for students, funding prototype development, and connecting young innovators with entrepreneurs. Additionally, he stressed the significance of early childhood development as a key driver of cognitive growth. Further, the Chief Minister announced several upcoming initiatives, including the mandatory inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in schools, the expansion of student exchange programs for enhanced exposure, and support for youth participation in national and international competitions. He encouraged students to embrace perseverance, discipline, and continuous effort as fundamental principles for success.
A highlight of the event was the official launch of new initiatives by the Chief Minister, including:
- STEM Lab – A dedicated facility to enhance hands-on learning in science and technology.
- Chess Pa Translated Books (Khasi and Garo Versions) – A resource to promote logical thinking and strategic skills among students.
- Science on Wheels: Taking Science to Remote Areas – A mobile science outreach program to make scientific learning more accessible.
As part of the celebration, certificates were awarded to winners of various science competitions, including Drawing/Painting, Essay Writing, and Poetry Writing, held at the Digital Planetarium, Tura.
Additionally, meritorious students who achieved the highest marks in Science, Technology, and Mathematics in the Secondary and Higher Secondary MBOSE Examinations 2024-2025 were felicitated by the Chief Guest.
The event concluded with Conrad K Sangma engaging in an interactive session with students who participated in Tinkering Labs and the Model-Making Competition, fostering a spirit of scientific curiosity and innovation.
