Shillong Airport Expansion Project Announced

Shillong, April 5 : The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued a tender notice for the expansion of Shillong Airport. This project is a result of efforts led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.

The expansion will include extending the runway by 571 meters, bringing the total length to 2,400 meters, which will accommodate A-320 type aircraft. The project also involves expanding the terminal building and apron, along with other infrastructure development. The estimated cost is Rs 11,944.47 lakh (Rs 119.44 crore), with an expected completion time of 18 months, including a three-month monsoon window.

CM Conrad K. Sangma said “This is a moment of great satisfaction and optimism for Meghalaya. The issuance of the tender for Shillong Airport’s expansion is the result of our consistent efforts over the past several years. Improved air connectivity is not just about convenience- it is about transforming lives, boosting tourism, attracting investment, and creating opportunities for our youth. Once completed, this project, along with our efforts to enhance connectivity and tourism activities in the state, will be a game changer for the people of Meghalaya.”

The AAI submitted the draft master plan for the expansion in August 2024, and the land acquisition process for the additional 22 acres required for the project is underway.

The Meghalaya government is also investing nearly ₹4,000 crore to develop new tourism circuits and strengthen existing ones. Private sector investments are also being mobilized, including plans for large resorts at Umiam, Shillong, and New Shillong.

In December 2024, the government laid the foundation stone for the Shillong Ropeway Project, the state’s first passenger ropeway, to link tourist and cultural landmarks across Shillong. Additional tourism projects are planned for Mawsynram, Mandalgre, Marngar, and Wahkhenare. Strategic road projects are also underway to improve connectivity between Shillong and New Shillong Township.

Meghalaya is also promoting tourism through festivals such as the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, Me’gong Festival in Tura, and Winter Tales. The Shillong Airport expansion is expected to increase the number of tourists visiting Meghalaya.

The Government is also working towards operationalising Baljek Airport in the Garo Hills region. Plans to commence flight services are underway, along with the proposed expansion of the runway to support broader connectivity. These developments are being pursued with urgency, to significantly enhance regional accessibility and economic growth.
